What's saving your life right now?
In the clutter of my inbox last week, I stumbled across a newsletter asking me: What’s saving your life right now?
I’ve been thinking about it ever since. That question feels pressing right now, when things still feel grim and heavy. What’s getting you through? Can you find the good things? Can you hold onto them?
In the post linked above, Anne says, “Our lives reflect what we persistently think about.” I’ve been thinking about attention lately, about where I want mine to go, about what I want to focus on.
Here are a few things on my short list right now:
Getting outside for a walk, every single day.
Park hangs with friends. Feeling especially grateful to be in California with our mild weather these days!
Baking, ranging from elaborate projects like the 10-layer Russian honey cake I made last week to these insanely simple (but delicious) lava cakes that can be mixed up in less time than our oven takes to preheat.
Opening the fancy wine on a Tuesday, just because.
Bits of routine, where I can find it. Waking up about the same time each day, working on a puzzle each weekend, calling my grandma each week. I’m holding tight to small things that give structure to this strange time, and it’s helping.
How about you? What’s saving your life right now? We’ve got to find the good things where we can.
